Employment in the ever-changing field of computer and
information technology has steadily increased. With continued rapid improvements in all phases of computer technology, computer-based information processing has been integrated into virtually every facet of life. Consequently, employment opportunities in the field are expected to continue increasing as we move ahead in the 21st century.
Students pursuing the College of Technology's associates degree in computer technology may choose to follow tracks that lead to a concentration in a specific area of information technology (IT) careers including networking, application development and multimedia. These concentrations also begin to prepare students for the required examinations for various professional certifications. There is also a general concentration, which prepares students for positions in small- and medium-sized organizations that require computer staff to perform a wide range of technical duties.
These combined skills prepare students for immediate entry into the computer technology field in numerous areas including network administration, end-user technical support, general hardware maintenance, multimedia and applications/Web development.
The associates degree is granted after the successful completion of 61-63 semester hours of coursework. Because professionals in rapidly changing computer-related fields must continually upgrade their skills, many of the credits earned in the Associate of Applied Business in Computer Technology program can be applied toward the College of Technology's 2+2 program for a Bachelor of Science in Technology. Students interested in the bachelor's degree should consult with a faculty advisor.
