Nursing Program Increases Focus on Geriatric Care

Posted Feb. 14, 2014

The Associate of Applied Science in Nursing degree program at Kent State University at Tuscarawas is expanding the nursing curriculum to give added focus to geriatric care. The new endeavor, Fostering Advanced Care Excellence for Seniors (FACES) is being incorporated throughout the nursing program curriculum.

As part of FACES, new activities were introduced during Fall Semester 2013 emphasizing the importance of training students to providing excellent nursing care to older adults.

Mr. Yoder is the human patient simulator manikin in the nursing laboratory. Students will care for him during their laboratory experience. The nursing students will assess and provide care for Mr. Yoder base on his diabetic condition for first year students and his respiratory conditions for the second year students.

With an average of 60 graduates per year, the Associate of Applied Science in Nursing is one of the largest academic programs at Kent State Tuscarawas. Eighty-seven percent of the nursing program's graduates pass the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCLEX) examination, which is well above the national rate. The program is accredited by the Ohio Board of Nursing and the Accreditation Commission for Nursing Education.

In addition to the associate degree program, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and an RN to Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) is also offered at the campus.
