Ohio Insurance Institute’s Insurance Education Day in Columbus 2013

Salem – Three students from Kent State University at Salem received scholarships during the recent Ohio Insurance Institute’s Insurance Education Day in Columbus. The Griffith Insurance Education Foundation awarded scholarships to Katelyn Moore of East Liverpool; George Bosworth of Lisbon; and Angela Moroni of Salem.

Moore received the Insurance Education Day Scholarship, valued at $1,500. She is the first Kent State student to declare insurance studies as a major, which is a new bachelor’s degree program that began last fall on the Salem campus and the first of its kind in Ohio. She graduated in 2010 from Beaver Local High School and is also seeking an associate of applied business degree in business management technology at Kent State.

Bosworth and Maroni each received the $1,000 Elizabeth A. Kocur Insurance Studies Scholarship RecipientsMemorial Scholarship.

Bosworth graduates this month with an associate of applied business degree in business management. He will return to Kent State to earn bachelor degrees in insurance studies and business management. He is a 2002 graduate of David Anderson High School in Lisbon.

Maroni also is working to earn dual bachelor degrees in insurance studies and accounting. She is a 1997 graduate of Salem High School.

Carol Blaine, lead faculty for the insurance studies program at Kent State, attended the event with the students. Also attending was Michelle Quinn of Salem, a student majoring in business management.

“It was an honor to accompany these students to the Insurance Education Day and to see their academic accomplishments recognized by leaders in the Ohio insurance industry,” Blaine said. “They certainly represent excellence in action.”

The insurance studies program at Kent State is the only such program in Ohio.  Students can take classes online or at any Kent State regional campus. For information about the degree program, visit www.salem.kent.edu/insurance; e-mail cblaine1@kent.edu; or call 1-877-KENT.EDU (877-536-8338).

The conference included educational sessions on current topics such as natural gas drilling, distracted driving, hail damage testing and an arson dog demonstration. Students could also meet insurance professionals from various insurance companies throughout Ohio.
