Honors Student Tina Schultz Participates in Global Village Internship Program

This past summer, accounting major Tina Schultz participated in the Global Village for Future Leaders of Business and Industry.  This diverse program is designed to build a global network for future business leaders.  Participants in the program represented over 50 countries.

Schultz spent six weeks at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania where she participated in executive panels, course seminars, intern-led lunch sessions, shopping trips, cultural event nights, team building exercises, volunteer work, trips to New York City and Washington D.C. and a major client project.

The core of the program was the client project that participants worked on in teams. The team Schultz was a part of consisted of members from Japan, Mexico, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Spain, and Italy. Schultz admits that their group started off a little shaky and slightly closed minded, but as the weeks went on and the pressure to finish the project increased, so did the synergy. The group learned to work together, to compromise, to listen and to realize that everyone has his or her own unique contributions.

Although the seminars and executive panels were very informative and insightful, Schultz said  the greatest learning at Global Village occurred between peers. From late talks over monstrous ice cream with a woman from Yemen about arranged marriages to sitting outside the dorms with a friend from India hearing about his life at home or listening to a colleague from Israel retell the history of his country over a world map in her room, she learned so much more than she expected.

The Global Village program was formed in 1997 by Lee Iacocca. Since then, it has continued to expand and has become more diverse each year. The program is directed by Kent State alumnus Richard Brandt. The program is “designed for young professionals and experienced students who share the dream of building a leadership career in business and industry, and who want to form an active and lasting global network.”
