Kimberly Todd-White, lecturer in the Department of English, was named the recipient of the 2010 Distinguished Honors Faculty Award.

Kim served the Honors College for many years with outstanding teaching and dedication to Honors students far beyond normal expectations. The year 2010 marked her tenth year as a member of the Honors College faculty. Throughout her time of involvement in the Honors College, she directed a few Senior Honors theses and supervised numerous smaller research projects. She served as a discussion leader for Honors College summer reading projects and has continually supported efforts to build strong, lasting relationships between students and faculty in the Honors College.

Her students speak very highly of her. One of them stated, “Professor Todd is cool, personable, reasonable, helpful, understanding, and extremely knowledgeable. She is never condescending nor authoritarian in teaching - leading to a class which motivates one to think and discuss rather than memorize facts and adhere to the professor’s opinion. She’s a great professor!”

Another one of her students emphasized that “…Kim Todd’s section of Honors colloquium should be a requirement for ALL freshmen. She has opened a world to me and my classmates that I never knew existed. She is an incredible professor who has devised an invaluable course.”

Another student said that “Kim Todd’s course taught me several life lessons, mostly due to the way that she taught. She showed me how to truly appreciate literature, and my writing significantly improved. I’m very fortunate to have had her as an instructor.” The same person goes on to say “She truly respects us as students and we in turn respect her. I love Kim Todd!”

Such comments echo the superb Honors teaching evaluations she has received over the years. They are evidence that Kim is always thinking freshly about her teaching. She embodies the BEST qualities of Honors teaching- a passion for her discipline, high quality standards for her students’ work, and caring for and supporting her students as individuals.
