Disability Services
The Office of Student Accessibility Services provides assistance to students with varying degrees and types of disabilities in order to maximize educational opportunity and academic potential.
Disabilities that qualify for services include, but are not limited to:
-
visual, hearing and speech impairments
-
specific learning disabilities such as ADD and ADHD
-
chronic health disorders
-
psychological disabilities
-
physiological disorders
- temporary disabilities
Accommodations are based upon appropriate medical, psychological and/or educational documentation provided by the student. Students should notify us at least one month prior to beginning classes so there is time to arrange appropriate accommodations.
Please note that there are major differences in services provided by high schools and colleges, and collegiate academic departments cannot modify, waive, or change requirements that would fundamentally alter the integrity of their programs. High schools follow the law as outlined in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) while the applicable law for colleges is the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Follow this link to explore the comparisons between IDEA and Section 504 & 508 of the ADA Rehabilitation Act.
The Americans with Disabilities Act stipulates that students must advocate (self-identify) for themselves, not through their parents or any other agent! For more specific information about SDS at Kent State University's Regional Campuses, view the SDS Handbook now.
